Professor of architecture, one of the well known artists of Ukraine, Alexander Shteynberg, was born in 1933 in the city of Kharkov. Since 1957, Alex worked as an architect and an artist. He was responsible for more than one hundred projects: apartments, schools, private houses, monuments, etc.

Over the years, 28 of Alex's projects were awarded prizes in competitions. In 1966, he won the first prize in a free competition to commemorate the tragedy at Babi Yar, but the Ukrainian Government didn't want a Jewish architect in charge of the monument and its construction; therefore, Babi Yar monument was not built at that time.

In 1991, Artist decided to leave Kiev with his family. In 1992, Alexander Shteynberg arrived in Philadelphia where he continued working on his major  theme - The Holocaust. He created a powerful triptych dedicated as a memorial to Babi Yar.  Since 1992 his paintings have been on display in professional galleries, banks, synagogues, colleges, etc.

Shteynberg's diversity of subject is astonishing... One could be fooled by the perfection of  his building (every brick, every ornament in place) into seeing this painter as a realist, but close inspection reveals unusual perspectives and surrealistic concepts...

He's daring in his perspectives and ideas, he takes an illustrative look at things and adds to it.
